Raml tram (suspended for upgrade)
The Raml tram has not run since 4 April 2026: the line — which ran from Mahatet El Raml towards El Raml, Victoria and San Stefano — was partly suspended on 11 February 2026 and stopped entirely on 4 April for the development and upgrade project run by the National Authority for Tunnels. Reopening is expected in 2028, according to the National Authority for Tunnels (Youm7, 5 Oct 2026; in May 2026 the authority’s chairman gave 1 July 2028); suspension dates from Al-Ahram Gate, 28 Jan 2026, and Masrawy, 3 Apr 2026.
Replacement buses and minibuses run along the Corniche, Abu Qir Road and Bakos routes during the upgrade.
Bus & microbus
Many bus and microbus routes meet at Mahatet El Raml and Misr Station, connecting Moharram Bek, Bab Sharqi and the rest of the city.
Confirm the destination, route and fare before boarding.
Railway
Misr Station is the main arrival point from Cairo and the Delta, inside the district and within walking distance of the Roman theatre.
Book ahead in high season and around public holidays.
Walking
Walking gives you time to notice downtown façades and explore landmarks at your own pace. Choose a route to suit the distance, pavement conditions and your needs.
Pavements are narrow in places; take care with traffic, especially at peak hours.
